Course Overview: Provides the skills and knowledge of both how fires develop and also how to prevent this happening as well as the ability to act as part of a team to tackle a fire using equipment such as extinguishers, hose reels and breathing apparatus.

This two and a half day course is designed to form one part of the STCW Basic Safety Training Week. Approval is MCA to STCW 95, A-V1/1-2.
The course will equip students with the skills and knowledge to understand how fires develop, what preventative methods can be employed as well as the ability to take immediate action upon encountering a fire.

The theory sessions are conducted by experienced master mariners followed by practical exercises on the fire ground and in a multi-storey steel fire unit fitted with simulated shipboard compartments, which is used for live fire training. This course provides the basic knowledge to be able to keep the ship safe from hazards and respond both quickly and effectively if fire does break out.

This course is taught offsite at a specialist fire training ground

Teaching methods:  Mixture of theory including video, lectures and group discussions as well as practical sessions on the fire ground 

Assessment methods:  Students are assessed by a mixture of continuous questioning and observation

Itinerary:  1315 until 1715 on Day 1. 0830 until 1700 on Days 2 and 3
